In its Global Energy Review, the agency reported that solar photovoltaics accounted for more than a quarter of total energy demand growth in 2025. Coal demand trends varied by region. While coal use declined in some major markets due to renewable expansion, it increased in others, including the United States, where higher natural gas prices led to a shift back toward coal in power generation.

The findings highlight a broader trend toward diversification in global energy supply. Rather than relying on a single dominant source, countries are increasingly combining solar, gas, nuclear, and other technologies to meet growing demand while balancing cost, reliability, and emissions goals.

Solar’s leading role reflects not only its rapid scalability but also its cost competitiveness compared with traditional energy sources. As deployment continues to expand across regions including China, the European Union, and India, solar is becoming a structural driver of global energy growth rather than a supplementary resource.
